The Alchemical Thanks

It's Thanksgiving 🍗  2020 in the United States and I'm sure you, like me, are celebrating 🎉 all the wonderful things in our lives that we are grateful for. Family, love, connection. But 2020 has been a strange year. With the pandemic in full force many families are having remote virtual celebrations. My family is spread all across the country, and usually someone would have flown somewhere to be with everyone. But not this year. This year it is sending Zoom invites 📺  around so we can virtually share the holiday.

The Alchemical Exchange
Alchemy, and especially Synaptic Alchemy, is all about looking at the world through different eyes. It's all about looking at the world through transformation. The Alchemical Transformation (AT) has you look at things in 3 steps.

Nigrego – The Old Thanksgiving Rule

This part of the Alchemical Transformation is all about finding an old belief, an old way of behaving, or old patterns that could definitely use some re-vamping. When it comes to Thanksgiving, I know for me, one of my old behaviors was to EAT TO MUCH. It just kinda goes without saying that's what can happen with all those lovely foods waiting for us.

We all know that eating until we can't move isn't good for us. It makes us feel sluggish, messes with our insulin and sugar levels, and puts on extra pounds just when it is cold outside and we tend to be less active.  That means ousting the old rule to EAT UNTIL YOU'RE STUFFED. Bye old rule.

Albedo – The New Thanksgiving Rule
So this year, my Alchemical Transformation is to adopt the Japanese concept of hara hachi bun me which teaches people to eat until you are 80% full. Did you know that Okinawa in Japan has the highest level of centenarians in the world? There is research about how keeping your calorie count under your “my pants are gonna bust” limit is a great way extend life expectancy. So New Rule, only eat until I'm 80% full.

Not sure if anyone here remembers the Chuck Jones animated version of the short story by Rudyard Kipling.

Rikki was a mongoose is a fierce battle to protect his home. And he always used to say:

A full mongoose is a slow mongoose

And a slow mongoose is a dead mongoose. And no one wants to be a dead mongoose. So, it's 80%.

Rubedo – A new idea EVERYWHERE

I've decided that I'd like to live to 100, or 150, or 180 years old. Not sure if I can, but I might as well give it a shot 😀 . So I think it is time to start adopting “hara haci bun me” in my daily regimen. That means watching my calories, smaller portions, and maybe not eating everything on my plate. It means “hara haci bun me” as a rule everyday.
